Looking at Greek pottery, particularly red- and black-figure, one will often see the gods presented just as the human characters. For instance, on a pot by the Berlin Painter of Achilles vs. Hector (Memnon on the other side), both Athena and Apollo show up. (A picture is available at the British Museum’s website. Search ‘Berlin Painter.’) Many vases feature Athena and other gods, active in the lives of the Greek heroes.
The question: Does this indicate that the Greeks believed the gods were physically present and visible to someone actually there, or does it only show that they believed the gods to be active in the scenes (rather than visible or present)?
